Deducting Merchant Fees from a refund for cancelled reservation?
Can I deduct the merchant fees from a refund for a cancellation of the reservation before refunding the guest?
@bob-jedrzejek - yes you can. When you cancel a reservation, you can specify how much of a refund to process. You can subtract whatever your cancellation fees or transaction fees are, if that is your policy.
Hey @Bob-Jedrzejek - depending on when you created your Stripe account, you can deduct the fees. I recommend manually calculating the amount and doing a partial refund.
For Stripe accounts created BEFORE September 14, 2017:
No - When issuing a refund against any payment collected by Stripe, Stripe will include their payment processing fee as part of the refund.
For Stripe accounts created AFTER September 14, 2017:
Yes - Stripe changed their policy for newer accounts and will charge their processing fee as part of the refund.
@jess-milligan Thanks Jess. We did deduct the Stripe fee from the refund and let the guest know that a portion of their deposit was retained by the merchant account and would not be returned… (can’t return what we don’t have). Appreciate your help, as always! Jackie
@jenny-oest Thank you!
